Changing your name in Mumbai takes about two weeks and costs under ₹5,000 for most standard cases. Affidavit on day one, newspaper ads by day two or three, Maharashtra or central gazette in 7–15 working days after that.

This is the Mumbai-specific version of the process: which offices, which newspapers, which gazette, what's different here versus the rest of India.

The three steps, Mumbai edition

1. Affidavit (same day). Notarised affidavit on Maharashtra stamp paper stating old name, new name, address, reason. Notaries are available across the city — Ghatkopar, Dadar, Fort, Andheri court premises. Done in hours.

2. Newspaper ads (next day). One English daily + one Marathi daily — Marathi is the regional-language requirement in Maharashtra, not Hindi. Both must circulate in your district:

• Mumbai City / Mumbai Suburban → standard Mumbai editions work
• Thane, Kalyan, Navi Mumbai, Vasai → confirm the edition covers your district; "Mumbai edition" alone can be questioned
• Pune, Nashik, Solapur and beyond → we book regional editions there too; a client once needed Solapur-edition papers specifically and the passport office there checked

Cost from ₹500–₹900 for both papers. Prints next morning if booked before cutoff.

3. Gazette (7–15 working days). Mumbai applicants choose between:

• Maharashtra Government Gazette — fine for use within the state
• Gazette of India (central) — pick this if a passport, visa, or out-of-state document is anywhere in your future

Where things happen physically (if you want them to)

You don't need to visit anywhere — the whole process runs on email and WhatsApp, and we courier originals to your door. Plenty of our clients outside Mumbai, and a few in Dubai, finished their cases without entering the city.

Mumbai-specific cases we see most

Marriage surname change. Mumbai's biggest category. Quick note that saves many women money: for adding a husband's surname on a passport, the marriage certificate plus a joint affidavit is often sufficient — the full gazette route may not be needed. Ask before paying for the works. If you're changing your first name too, or reverting after divorce, then yes, full process.

Children's school-record fixes. Parents discover the school register, birth certificate, and Aadhaar all disagree. Fix it before Class 10 board registration. A parent swears the affidavit for a minor; the rest is the standard process. We've handled cases where parents told us they expected a bureaucratic ordeal and it closed in days.

Family bundles. Three or four family members changing a surname together. Each person needs their own affidavit and gazette entry, but ads and filing can be coordinated together — one of our reviewed cases was exactly this, three family members, done without inflated timelines.

Numerology changes. Adding a letter, doubling a vowel. Legally identical to any other name change — affidavit, ads, gazette. The passport office treats "Suresh → Sureshh" with the same paperwork as a full rename.

Spelling corrections. One-letter fixes for a bank or university sometimes go through on affidavit alone, depending on the institution. Ask them first. If they say gazette, it's the standard route.
